A heading in today's paper on the flood in Australia, I was thinking.... isn't it the same with self esteem or self confidence?
Minutes of outburst from stressful parents may lead to low self esteem in children that will take years to rebuild, if not a lifetime.
I was always interested to know what makes a youth criminal, aren't all baby born pure? I've always believed that all of us is born with a pure heart. Many researches or the media tell us it's the first 8 years of a child's life that matter the most, so what is the differences that makes a criminal? What factors lead to a pure child turn into someone who thinks it's ok hurting others, directly or indirectly? Is it single parents family? Or children in abusive relationships.... etc etc? These are all the questions that ponders in my mind when I was reading The Power of Mothers: Releasing Our Children
As a matter of fact, we, as a society, are all responsible. The main influences are still the family or the living environment of the child, however, how we look at those families, the media, and the level of social support...etc, all contribute to young criminals in our world.
With our overcrowded prisons, is our correction system really the best way for a criminal-free country? On a family level, is punishment a better way to grow physically and emotionally healthy children? Smacking or punishment might be a quicker way for misbehaviours, however only love and patient bring out the best in our children, and the non-judgemental citizens in our society help prevent more criminals. Anyway, easier said than done I guess.
